forefinger of the right hand, align the hammer pin holes of the bolt link, hammer, and slide with the hammer pin hole in the slide of the receiver. Insert hammer pin (86) to the right until only 4 inch of the hammer pin protrudes from the receiver. Replace the operating handle (88). Tap the end of the protruding hammer pin with sufficient force to drive it home. Replace recoil spring (40) and guide (41). With the end of the index finger on the checkered end of the recoil spring guide head, turn it until it is properly seated. Replace the trigger guard and trigger guard retaining pin (11). Cock the piece. Slide the gas cylinder tube and forearm (118) to the rear of the gas piston. Replace gas cylinder tube retaining pin (53). Test the piece.

7. Stripping and assembling trigger mechanism.-a. Sequence of stripping. (1) Ejector.

(2) Magazine catch spring.

(3) Magazine catch pin.

(4) Magazine catch.

(5) Magazine release.

(6) Sear spring.

(7) Trigger pin.

(8) Trigger and connector.

(9) Sear pin.

(10) Sear.

(11) Sear carrier and counterrecoil spring.

(12) Change lever spring.

(13) Change lever.

b. Detailed stripping.-Depress the ejector lock (30) with the point of a dummy cartridge. Hold the thumb in front of the magazine catch spring (33) to prevent it flying out and slide the ejector (29) out of its seat. (See Pl. 4.) Remove the magazine catch spring. Remove the magazine catch pin (35) and then the magazine catch (32) (see Pl. 5) and magazine release (34) may be lifted out. (See Pl. 6).

To remove the sear spring (26), insert the trigger guard retaining pin spring (12) under the sear spring (26) above the connector stop (27). Pry up, pressing against sear spring with thumb and pulling it out to the rear. (See Pl. 7.) Push out the trigger pin (14) (see Pl. 8) and then the trigger (13) and connector (16) can be removed through top of trigger guard. (See Pl. 9.) Push out sear pin (24) with recoil spring guide (41). Remove sear (23). (See Pl. 10.) Pry up on sear carrier (25) (see Pl. 11) and lift out. Remove the change lever spring (18) by prying the bent end out of its seat with the rounded end of the sear spring and moving the change lever from front to rear. When clear of the change lever, push it out the rest of the way by pressing with the thumb against the sear stop.

Pull out the change lever.

c. Detailed assembling.—Assembling is in reverse order of the stripping. The following points should be observed in assembling:

(1) It is easy to seat the magazine catch spring (33) if the ejector (29) is moved down until it is flush with the magazine catch spring before attempting to compress the latter. (See Pl. 12.)

(2) In assembling the change lever spring (18), first insert the ears in the slots in the trigger guard and push spring forward a slight distance, then
