PREFACE

THIS History of Lord Lytton's Indian Administration has been drawn up in compliance, as far as circumstances permitted, with the instructions in my father's will, which were as follows: I request my wife to endeavour to obtain the assistance of some statesman or writer, in whose ability and character she has confidence, for the production of a complete record of

my Indian Administration.' With this request at heart my mother first turned to Sir John Strachey, my father's colleague and most loyal friend, who responded to her appeal with cordial zeal. Into his hands were placed all the private and official documents of Lord Lytton's Viceroyalty, and no man was more highly qualified to deal with them than he. Unfortunately, illness interrupted his fulfilment of this task, and his medical advisers forbade his undertaking any arduous work. His assistance, however, in the preparation of this book has been invaluable. The first chapters owe much to his pen, and his advice throughout has been continually sought, and ungrudgingly given.

The materials collected and preserved by my father in connection with his work in India were so
