OBSERVATIONS ON THE SUMMER GRAIN HARVEST
IN COMMUNIST CHINA

[Following is a translation of an article by Lin Ch'en
(2651 6754) in the Chinese-language periodical Fei-
ch'ing Yen-chiu, Taipei, Vol 1, No 6, 30 June 1967,
pages 25-30.]

Salient Points

Since the beginning of June the mainland Communist bandits have entered their summer harvesting season. On the one hand Communist China has spread the report that it has obtained a "bumper" grain crop in their summer harvest, but on the other, it has made the outcry, "Protect the summer harvest." This clearly indicates that the work of summer harvesting has encountered very great impediments. At the same time, judging by the political disturbances on the mainland in the first half-year, the condition of growth of summer crops, and the confusion in the current summer harvesting work, the summer crops in Communist China must have been reduced.

The word "bumper" used by Communist China in connection with its crops is merely a propaganda stunt to cover up the defest of the violent struggle of the "Cultural Revolution." is also a tranquillizer applied to calm down the anxiety over the present grain shortage. It is estimated that summer grain in mainland China will be reduced by about 15%, which will tend to deepen the crisis of grain shortage in the second half-year
