He is to be very careful to fend, by the first Opportunity, to the proper Offices, diftinct Accounts of all the Supplies he gives to other Ships; or receives from them, and of all Stores that shall be returned into any of His Majefty's Stores abroad, either decayed or ferviceable, to remain there as a Charge and Discharge to the said Officers.

He is to obferve feasonable Times in setting up his The Rigging Shrouds, and other Rigging, especially when they are new, and apt to ftretch; and to be very careful to favour his Mafts, and not to hazard them in blowing ed. Weather, except upon a Chafe, or some other preffing Occafion.

When there shall be a Neceffity to caft any Rigging, Rigging and or other Stores, he is firft to order a Survey to be taken furveyed, bethereof, in the fame Manner as is herein after directed fore caft. with Regard to other Surveys.

He is to caufe fuch of the Stores, as require it, to Stores and be frequently brought upon Deck, to be furveyed to be aired. and aired, and their Defects repaired; and the StoreRooms are to be cleaned, aired, and put into good Condition, and made as fecure as possible against

He is never to make Ufe of the Ship's Sails for covering Boats, or for Awnings; Canvas Awnings being allowed to Ships in Southern Voyages.

XXVII.

He is not to fuffer the Ships Decks or Gratings to be scraped oftner than shall be absolutely neceffary, but take Care, that they be well washed and fwabbed once a Day, and the Air let into the Hold as frequently as may be.

XXVIII.

He shall permit every Officer to poffefs the Cabbin proper Cab- allotted to him by the Custom of the Navy, and not make any Variation therein.

And for the farther preventing fuch Accidents, Care To put out is to be taken every Night, that immediately upon the Fire and Canfetting of the Watch, both Fire and Candle be put the Watch. out in the Cook-Room, Hold, Steward-Room, CockPit, and every where between Decks, the Master at Arms, or fome other careful Officer, being fent about to see the fame performed; nor are Candles to be used in any other Part of the Ship, but in Lanthorns, without the Captain's Leave.

He is not to fuffer any Person whatsoever to futtle, None to fator fell any Sort of Liquors to the Ship's Company, nor any Debts for the fame to be inferted in the Slop-Book, under Pretence of Cloaths or Tobacco iffued to the Seamen.

Before the Ship proceeds to Sea, or as foon after as How to rate poffible, he is to call together his First Lieutenant, Company. Mafter, and Boatfwain, and take their Affiftance, (as alfo the Gunner's and Carpenter's for their Crews) in Examining and Rating the Ship's Company according to their Abilities, which he is to do without Partiality or Favour, and particularly not to Rate any as Inferior Officers, but those who are properly qualified; and to take ftrict Care that every Perfon in the Ship, without Regard or Diftinction, do actually perform the Service for which he is rated. in rating the Ship's Company, it is here declared, that none shall be rated Able, but who have ferved three Years (at least) at Sea, and are capable of doing the Duty of an Able Seaman; nor Midshipman, till they have ferved four Years, and are in all Respects qualified for it, nor will they be paid as fuch, unless they produce regular Journals to the Commiffioner, who comptrols the Payment of the Ship. And the fame is expected from the Mafter's Mates.

None are to be rated Midshipmen Ordinary, but Midshipmen fuch as have ferved as Voluntiers by Order; and they lowed. who are fo rated, fhall receive the Pay of an Able Seaman, upon their producing a Certificate from their Captain, that they are qualified, and did the Duty of Midshipmen.
