the original line, as it was believed that the armistice would be signed at any time. Enemy casualties in July totaled about 72,000 men. Out of the five Chinese armies that had been identified in the attacks, the enemy had lost the equivalent of seven divisions. By 19 July the negotiators at Panmunjom had reached an accord on all points. Details were worked out within a week and the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed at 1000 hours 27 July 1953. The major provisions were as follows Demilitarized Zone. A military demarcation line was established along the final battle line. All troops and equipment of both sides were to be withdrawn 2 kilometers from this line, leaving a buffer zone of 4 kilometers separating the Communists from the Allies. Cessation of Hostilities. The commanders of the opposing sides were to order and enforce a complete cessation of all hostilities in Korea by all armed forces under their control, effective 12 hours after the signing of the Armistice Agreement. Prisoners of War. All prisoners who I wanted to return home were to be repatriated within 60 days through a Commission for Repatriation of Prisoners of War, which was to consist of 3 field grade officers from each side, and with the aid of the Red Cross teams of both sides. A Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission (NNRC), composed of members from India, Sweden, Switzerland, Poland, and Czechoslovakia, was to take control of the prisoners remaining after 60 days. Within 90 days after the NNRC took over the custody of such prisoners, the nations to which they belonged would have freedom and facilities to send representatives to the location where they were held, to explain to them their rights and their freedom to return home. Rotation. The strength of both sides was to remain frozen, but each side was permitted to rotate up to 35,000 men a month and to replace equipment. Ports of entry and departure were designated for both sides. Supervision. A Military Armistice Commission composed of 5 senior officers from each side, 3 from each side being of general or flag rank, was to supervise the implementation of the Armistice Agreement and to settle any violations of the Agreement through negotiations. A Neutral Nations Commission composed of senior officers from Sweden and Switzerland (UN choices) and Poland and Czechoslovakia (Communist choices) was to investigate complaints of truce violations outside of the demilitarized zone and to supervise the rotation of men and equipment. U.S. ARMY STRENGTH AND CASUALTIES. The number of individuals serving in the Army during the Korean War totaled 2,834,000. Of these, 1,153,000 served in the Far East. The Army suffered a total of 109,958 battle casualties, including 19,334 killed in action, 79,526 wounded, 4,442 missing in action, and 6,656 captured or interned. In addition, there were 8,370 deaths from other causes. Battle casualties for all the Armed Services totaled more than 142,000.
