mounted service in the field and for the purpose of instructing officers and enlisted men in the use of the cavalry saber, officers of cavalry are equipped with the cavalry saber.

404. Instruction with the officers' saber.-a. The positions and movements of the saber as given in the succeeding paragraphs of these regulations, except paragraph 411, refer only to the officers' saber.

b. Dismounted, the officers' saber scabbard is habitually carried attached to the belt by the saber slings and hooked up to the belt, guard to the rear. Mounted, the officers' saber scabbard is habitually carried in the saber carrier, attached to the near side of the cantle of the saddle.

405. To draw saber.-The command is: 1. Draw, 2. SABER. a. Dismounted.-At the command Draw, unhook the saber, with the thumb and first two fingers of the left hand, thumb on the end of the hook, fingers lifting the upper ring. Grasp the scabbard with the left hand at the upper band and bring the hilt of the saber a little forward, guard down, blade inclined downward to the rear at an angle of about 45°. Turn the head and glance toward the saber knot. Engage the right wrist in the saber knot and secure it. Grasp the hilt in the right hand, press the left hand against the left thigh and draw the saber about 6 inches from the scabbard. Turn the head and eyes to the front.

At the command Saber, draw the saber quickly, raising the arm to its full extent to the right front at an angle of about 45° with the horizontal, the saber, edge down, in prolongation of the arm. Make a slight pause and bring the saber down so that the back of the blade is against the point of the shoulder, edge to the front, arm nearly extended, elbow back, the grip clasped easily between the first and second fingers and the thumb, the third and fourth fingers back of the grip. At the same time hook up the scabbard with the thumb and first two fingers of the left hand, thumb through the upper ring, fingers supporting it. Drop the left hand by the side. This is the position of carry saber, dismounted. Members of dismounted organizations will not engage the wrist in the saber knot except when they intend to publish orders, call the roll, etc.

b. Mounted.-At the command Draw, execute the same movements as when dismounted, except that the left hand is not used. At the command Saber, execute the same movements as when dismounted, except that at carry saber, mounted, the right hand rests on the thigh.
