During the calendar year 1973, a total of 47 officers of the United States Postal Service were assaulted by 31 known offenders in 39 separate incidents.

Specifically, 39 Postal Service Security Police were assaulted by 26 known offenders in 32 separate incidents. Eight Postal Inspectors were assaulted by five known offenders in seven incidents.

Weapons Used In Assaults On Postal Service Officers

These assaults were the result of the use of various weapons. A breakdown of the weapons used shows that hands, fists, and feet were employed to assault 27 of these officers. Knives and other cutting instruments were used to assault six officers and seven officers were victims of threats of bodily harm. Three officers were victims of assaults with handguns, three were victims of assaults with blunt objects, and one victim was nearly run down by a truck. The following table shows a weapon breakdown of assaults on Postal Service Security Police and assaults on Postal Inspectors:

Officer Activity At Time Of Assault

United States Postal Service

The 39 victim Postal Security Officers and eight Postal Inspectors were assaulted in performance of their official duty. Available data shows that a total of 25 officers were assaulted while carrying out investigation, twelve officers while making arrests, seven officers were assaulted while conducting searches, and three officers were assaulted while off duty. The following table specifically illustrates the activities of the two groups of Postal Officers at the time of the assaults:
