Of term and government life insurance which has not matured, payments are being made to 17,905 veterans, to 23,661 widows, to 2,499 children, to 91,530 parents, and to 27,443 sisters and brothers, making a total of 163,038 in that group; but from which should be deducted 76,230, which was included in the other group in receipt of other compensation. So that I will only take of that number the difference, which would be 86,808, giving a total of 795,965 veterans, veterans' widows, children, or dependents, who are in receipt of some form of benefit from the Government each month. Now, gentlemen, in giving that, I do not wish to be understood or to imply that by the receipt of those benefits they are probably fully ample to cover all cases, but only to indicate to what extent our Government at this time is extending benefits. Mr. CRISP. What is the amount of money paid out per month to these different beneficiaries, or per year? Mr. CHINDBLOм. Before he puts that in, may I ask a question to clarify the figures: In figuring these numbers, do you classify the children as individuals or as groups of families? General HINES. No; we take them as individuals. Mr. CHINDBLOM. For instance, where a veteran has left 3, 4, or 5 children and each one of those is getting compensation, you list each child separately? General HINES. Yes. The law provides $6 to the first and then $5 to each additional child. Mr. CHINDBLOM. Have you any idea as to how many families the number of children would represent, or how many children there are in each family, on the average? General HINES. I think, Congressman, the average by family is about three children. Mr. CHINDBLOM. Among these veterans? General HINES. Yes; but we have that information and could furnish it to you.
