a large tree in the vicinity of THC CP #3. This tree partially obscured the Line of sight between TNC OP #5 and Te #. Shortly after the INC wort force arrived at the tree and degen pruning activities, I security personnel appeared at the work site. For a while, the Khi security observed the pruning without apparent concern. Suddenly, the 174 security force commander demanded that the JSF Commander cease the pruning or there would de trouble, did not, the MMC security force was attacked by a numerically superior force of K74 guarės vielding pick handles, knives, clude, and axes. The INC Security Force withdrew but not before the SP Commander and TMC Security Officer were killed and one ROKA Officer, three Karvia's, and four US enlisted man were wounded.

g. The August 1976 are marders culminated a long history of violence between the two opposing forces manning the RA. At the seach Secretaries' meeting on September 6, 1976, the INC and the KPA CPV agreed upon a supplement to the Armistice Agreement which went into affect on le September 1976. The principal outcome was to limit the crossing area by both sides, to establish a more definite marking of the MDX in the USA, to cause removal of the KPA guard posts from the south of the ML, and to restrict the security force of either side from crossing the MDI.

h. In July 1977, a CR-47 was shot down after it straved Into North Korean airspace. Three of the four crewmembers were killed in the crash. The USACG-JSA played a principal role in the return of the helicopter crew.

1978 was a record year for tourism; more than 43,000 tourists visited the 84. It was also a record year for MAC and Secretaries' meetings, with aix MAC meetings and six Secretaries' meetings being held. At the 4520 Secretaries' meeting held on 13 June 1978, the PSASG-USA returned to North Korea the eight-man crew of a spy boat captured in South Korean waters, At the twist MAC meeting held on 27 October 1978, the PNC charged the North Koreans with the construction of a third tunnel under the NPI. The North Koreans labeled the tunnel as a UNC fabrication and proceeded to turn the meeting into a propaganda session. The tunnel was located under 5 meters of solid rock and measured 2 meters by 2 meters and was capable of moving a large number of troops through it in a short period of time.

The unit (United States Army Support Group) was redesignated as the Pmited Nations Command Support Group - Joint Security Area (UNCSG-JSA), effective 11 June 1979. During 1979, six MAC and six Secretaries' meetings were held.

On 7 December 1979, one American soldier was killed and two seriously injured in an explosion on the North Korean side of the Demilitaried Zone. These soldiers, on patrol in dense fog and limited visibility, wandered across the MDL. The injured soldiers were evacuated to safety. The body of the deceased soldier was returned to US authorities on 14 December 1979, The UNCSG-ISA played a principal role in the return of deceased and the evacuation of the wounded personnel.

On 10 January 1980, a Change of Command ceremony was conducted. The outgoing Commander, LTC Lawerence T. Sughrue, said farewell to the unit and was followed by the incoming Commander, LTC James M. Cushman who welcomed the opportunity to command the UNCSG-JSA. The colors were passed by Rear Admiral Stephen J. 1* *, MEIM Hostettler completed his duties as Senior Member of the Military Armiwtiom Commission and was succeeded by RADM Storms. Also during the summer of 1981, the Joint Security Force Company activated a fourth platoon bringing 11 up to full strength.

1w6 Secretariat meetings were held in 1981. The 463d was held on 7 Aug and the 4649) on 21 Aug. The subjects of the two meetings were "firsts" and replete with political implications. During each of the meetings the remains of Chinese "People Volunteer" soldiers killed during the Korean Conflict were returned GVET the Military Demarcation Line to the Communists. The first remains, those of a Chinese Lieutenant Colonel, were found on Camp Kitty Hawk during excavation projects. The significance of the return of the remains was that the People's Republic of China implicitly acknowledged their participation in the Conflict. Before then, public acknowledgement was never made.

On 30 Oct, a "first" in the history of Panmunjom brought world attention to the Joint Security Area, On that date, a member of the Czechoslovakian Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission walked across the MDL and surrendered himself to soldiers at UNC Check Point #4 and requested asylum in the United States.

A Change of Command Ceremony was conducted at Camp Kitty Hawk on 11 Dec and LTC Sayles passed the colors of the unit to the incoming commander, LTC Richard A. Pack, LTC Pack's command brought increased field training for the security platoons. Significant efforts were made on SQT and EIB testing, and the first UNCSG-JSA platoon ARTEPS were conducted. New field gear, war time contingency mission training, and changes to the TDA all improved this unit's ability to accomplish its mission.

Six MAC meetings occurred. The 409th was held on 28 Dec 81, the 410th on 23 Jan 82, the 411th on 9 Mar, the 412th on 4 May, the 413th on 28 May, and the

414th on 26 Jun. Secretaries meetings were also plentiful. The 465th was held on 18 May, the 466th on 8 Jul, the 467th on 21 Jul, the 468th on 20 Aug, the 469th on 24 Aug, the 470th on 3 Sep, and the 471st on 13 Sep.

On 3 Dec, LTC Pack passed the colors to LTC Ronald A. Green, the new commander.

1983 was a year of renewal for the UNCSG-JSA, as several major construction projects came to fruition, to include the renovation of the UNC buildings on Conference Row. It was also the year of north Korean atrocity of the Rangoon bombing. This, of course, led to heightened tensions in the JSA and chance of war increased dramatically. This year also saw a number of Military Armistice Commission meetings and on 25 November, GEN Vessey, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, visited the JSA. On 18 November 1983, a change of command ceremony was held on Camp Kitty Hawk, as RADM Kelly passed the colors from LTC Green to the incoming commander, LTC Charles R. Viale.

1984 was a year of many firsts, and saw the renewal of talks between the South and north in Panmunjom. In April, the two Koreas began Sports talks to discuss the viability of forming joint teams for the Olympics. This trend toward increased contacts between the two governments increased as a series of Red Cross and Economic Talks were held. After disasterous flooding, the South accepted an offer of relief from the north. The UNCSG-JSA planned for, coordinated, and conducted the September 1984 north-South flood relief transfer operation, which for the first time since 1976, saw vehicular traffic across the Bridge of No Return in route back from the exchange site outside of Taesong-dong. Following this unprecedented cooperation, the surface view for relations between South and north looked good, but the KPA hadn't changed. On 22 November 1984, & KPA patrol was detected in the grasslands below CP#5 and south of the MDL. Following deployments of the UNC and KPA QRF's, the KPA patrol withdrew to north of the MDL. 23 November 1984 saw violence again return to the JSA, as KPA guards shot and killed one UNC security guard, CPL Jang M.K. and wounded one other. The Soviet Defector incident started when a Soviet citizen, Vasily Matusak crossed the MDL in an attempt to defect to the Republic of Korea. As many as 20 KPA soldiers in two groups pursued him across the MDL. They fired at the Soviet with automatic assault rifles and pistols in an attempt to kill the defector. CPL Jang and PFC Burgoyne returned the KPA fire with their pistols until both were shot; Jang, fatally. The QRF was deployed into the JSA to meet the KPA threat and quickly maneuvered to outflank the KPA and trapped a squad in the sunken pool, killing three KPA soldiers in the process. At this point, with the KPA trapped south of the MDL in the pool, a cease fire was called, and the KPA took their dead and wounded back to the north.

Following this incident, Secretaries and MAC Meetings were held at which time the north claimed that Matusak wandered south of the MDL and their soldiers merely went to his assistance. Further South-north talks were broken off till the spring. Talks resumed in the spring with sessions of Red Cross and Economic meetings. These culminated in the first movement in 12 years of a Red Cross delegation from the north to Seoul for a series of meetings in May. Also in May 1985, the UNCSG-JSA made the first dismounted crossing of the Imjin River by a battalion sized unit. This operation, which was without precedent in the ROK and US armies, was so successful that the 1st Infantry Division (ROK) and the 3d Brigade of the 2d infantry Division (US) made the crossing mandatory for their subordinate elements.

On 10 July 1985, LTC Viale handed the colors or to 1TC Rodney D. Burns; RADM Borne was the presenter.
