The narrative covers the major developments relating to Korea in this period but gives primary attention to the continuing efforts of the United Nations and the United States to achieve the unification of Korea in accordance with fundamental principles endorsed by the great majority of the members of the world organization. The documents, all of which have been previously issued, support and amplify the record of events summarized in the narrative. They include various official statements, declarations, and communiqués; diplomatic communications; excerpts from the proceedings of the Geneva Conference of 1954 relating to the Korean question; and a number of resolutions, reports, and other documents of the U.N. Security Council, the U.N. General Assembly, and subsidiary U.N. bodies. Publications previously issued by the Department of State provide information on developments in Korea from 1945 to 1948 and on U.S. policy in the first 8 months of the Korean conflict (June 1950February 1951), with selected documents.
