What we may gather from these Letters, in fhort, is this, That the Turks are, without Doubt, drawing together The Strength of their whole Empire, to carry on this War; and that their Armies, like thofe in the Revelations, will come up, as it were, on the Breadth of the whole Earth, fo vaft will be the Numbers of them! This, however, will but add to their Confusion, and facilitate their Overthrow, as well as render it the more glorious to the Chriftians, unless their Arms be manag'd with the greatest Judgment, as well as Gourage and Boldness.

GERMANT.

HE Imperial Troops were fo much fatigu'd by the

that Prince Eugene thought fit to feparate, and fend his Army into Winter-Quarters; and leaving the Command of them to Count Mercy, arriv'd on the 9th of November at Vienna, where he found the Joy of the Imperial Court for the good Succeffes of the Campaign against the Infidels, turn'd into the deepest Affliction, by the Death of the Emperor's only Child, the Arch-Duke of Auftria, who dy'd on the 4th of November, N. S. at the Age of fix Months and twenty-two Days. Mean While Count Mery, with a strong Detachment of Imperialists, diflodg'd the Turks from Vipalanka, and fome other fmall Places along the Danube, and on the Frontiers of Walachia; whilst another Detachment of Imperial Troops from Tranfylvania,

march'd

march'd with fo much Secrecy and Expedition to Bucho rest, the Place of Refidence of Mauro Cordato, Hofpodari or Prince of Walachia, that they furpriz'd him and his Family, and brought them off.

The feizing and carrying away a Prince from his capital City, being an Event no lefs remarkable, than extraordinary, we think fit to give the Particulars of it. General Steinville, Governor of Transylvania, detach'd a Colonel of the Rafcians, nam'd Stephen Dettine, with a strong Party, to make an Incurfion into Walachia: He having penetrated as far as Buchoreft, divided his Troops into three. Bodies, and order'd one of them to attack fome Tartars who lay encamp'd before the Place, another to fall on the Turks within the Town, while himself with the third would attack the Palace of the Hofpodar. These three Attacks were made at the fame Time with fo good Order and Bravery, that the Turks and Tartars were put to Flight, having had 200 Men kill'd on the Spor, and the Hofpodar with his whole Family were taken Prisoners, and brought to Hermanftat in Tranfylvania, by the Way of Tergovift. This Maure Cordato was a mere Stranger to the Walachians, impos'd upon them by the Turks, in Con fideration of the great Services he had render'd to the Porte in feveral Negotiations, particularly in the Treaty of Carlowitz. He was a Native of Chio, of a good Family in that Ifland, born a Chriftian, and has always profefs'd the Religion of the Greek Church. He was the chief Contriver of the Ruin of the Family of the unfortunate Cantacuzene, the late Hofpodar of Walachia, whom he falfely accufed before the Grand Signior, and procur'd him to be strangled at Conftantinople, together with his eldest Son, in order to obtain his Principality, He fucceeded, 'tis true, in his Defign, which neverthelefs render'd him odious to the Walachians, who would willingly have continu'd under the Obedience of the Cantacuzenes, who are not only Natives of Walachia, but one of the moft confiderable Families of that Couritry. The late Hofpodar of that Name, who, as we faid before, fuffer'd Death at Conftantinople, left behind him a Widow and two Sons, who, towards the Clofe of laft Year, found Means to escape out of Turky, where they had been ever fince confin'd; and paffing thro' Italy, arriv'd at Vienna, hoping, by throwing themselves under the Protection of the Emperor, to be reftor'd to their paternal Eftate, if not to the Principality.

They

They the rather flatter'd themselves with thefe Hopes, because about this Time the States of Walachia writ in very fubmiffive Terms to the Emperor, requesting him to appoint for Hofpodar of their Country, George Cantacuzene, Son of Terragis Cantacuzene, their former Prince. They put his Imperial Majefty in Mind, that the late Emperor Jofeph had promis'd to do his utmost to procure that Dignity for that young Prince; and they concluded with Affurances that they would venture their Lives and Fortunes in affifting the Emperor against the common Enemy. His Imperial Majefty took Time to confider of their Requeft, having already nominated fome Noblemen of the Country to take upon them the Administration of the Government of that Principality; and fent Orders to General Steinville to march to their Aflistance with the Forces in Transylvania, in Cafe of Need.

But upon the feizing of Mauro Cordato, the Grand Signior appointed John Cordato, his Brother, to fucceed him; upon which, feveral of the Walachian Nobility retir'd into Tranfylvania with their beft Effects, to avoid falling a Prey to the Turks and Tartars; who, they knew, would not fail to compel them by Force of Arms to acknowledge the new Hofpodar. Mean While the captive Hofpodar offer'd 600 Purfes, of 500 Rixdollars each, and all his Jewels, for his Ranfom, provided he might be forthwith fet at Liberty. So round a Sum, one would have thought, might have tempted a Prince whofe Coffers run not over with Money; but the Emperor refus'd it, hoping that Cordato would be of greater Service to him, by his Advices in the Profecution of the War against the Infidels; with the true State of whofe Affairs, he could not but be better acquainted, than any of his own Ministers or Generals could pretend to be.

We will close up this Article, which we intend as the Continuation of the War in Hungary, with faying in general, that the Turks, this Winter, made feveral fuccefsful Incurfions into the Imperial Territories; fome of which occafion'd fharp Rencounters, particularly the Action that happen'd near Gradifca, in which the Imperialifts loft 1000 Men, and the Turks 4000, if we may believe the former; who, nevertheless, have not thought fit to publish a particular Account of it; but they own that another Detachment of the Ottomans, having pafs'd the Save at Belgrade, advanc'd to Peterwaradin, and burnt a great Magazine of Hay near that Place. The Imperial Parties too made feveral Inroads into the Turkish
