R. Charles Garden was arraign'd at Carlisle, for High Treafon, and pleaded guilty. The fame Day Bills of Indictment were found againft Mr. William Murray, Mr. Patrick Gordon, Mr. John Lindsey, and Mr. Silvefter Douglas.

About this Time Mr. Dawson and Mr. Biggs, who were convicted for altering Bank-Bills, were repriev'd during Pleafare.

Dec. 11, Mr. Robert Murray and Mr. James Carnegie, being arraign'd at Carlisle, pleaded guilty; as did alfo, on the 12th, Mr. Archibald Fotheringham, Mr. James Urquhart, and Mr. Alexander Hay; and on the 13th Sir Thomas Calder. The fame Day likewife Bills of Indictment were preferr'd againft James Burnet of Monbeddo, Efq; and Mr. James Spence, but both of them were found Ignoramus.

Dec. 14, dy'd Sir William Trumball, Knight, in the 78th Year of His Age: He had been one of the Prin cipal Secretaries of State to the late King William.

About the fame Time dy'd likewife Sir Thomas Morgan, Bart. one of the Knights of the Shire for the County of Hereford. As did likewife

Sir Benjamin Maddocks of Hertfordshire, Knight.

Dec. 15, Colonel Folim Balfour, Major Henry Balfour, Mr. Patrick Auchmortie, Mr. John Rattray, Mr. Robert Rollo of Powhouse, Mr. Patrick Seaton, Mr. Jolm Rofs, Mr. John Gordon, and Mr. Alexander Carnegie, being arraign'd at Carlile for High Treafon, feverally pleaded guilty to their Indictments.

Dec. 17, a Bill of Indictment was found at Carlisle against Brigadier Colin Campbell; and the following Perfons were arraign'd and pleaded guilty, viz. Mr. John Carstairs, Mr. Alexander Mackenzie of Frizerhale, Fames Carnegie, Surgeon, Mr. James Rollo, Mr. Alexander Forbes, Mr. Walter Grahme, and Mr. Thomas Drummond.

The fame Day Mr. Thomas Tollock was arraign'd, and pleaded not guilty: And Mr. William Hay demurr'd to the Jurifdiction of the Court; and the King's Counfel having join'd in Demurrer, Mr. Grahme and Mr. Hay, two Scotch Advocates, who were Counfel for the Prifoner, affign'd for Caufe of Demurrer, That by the Articles of Union, the Courts of Jufticiary of Scotland were to remain as formerly; and that no Scotch-man, for a Treas fon commited in Scotland, could be carry'd thence, and try'd in England; but the Court over-rul'd this Demurrer ; and on the 19th Mr. William Hay, with Leave of the Court, withdrew his Plea, and pleaded guilty.

Dec. 20, Mr. Booth, Chaplain to the Earl of Lincoln, dy'd of a Fit of an Apoplexy.

This Day Mr. Patrick Robifon, alias Robertfon, Mr. John Stuart of Fofs, and Mr. John Stuart of Glenbucket, being arraign'd at Carlisle, pleaded not guilty...

The fame Day feventy feven common Malefactors, convicted of feveral Felonies, c. pleaded his Majefty's Pardon at the Old Baily, but fifty nine of them were order'd for Tranfportation, the other eighteen abfolutely pardon'd, and fet at Liberty.

Dy'd Sir Francis Compton, in the 87th Year of his Age, He was the fifth Son of Spencer Earl of Northampton, by Mary the Daughter of Sir Francis Beaumont a Lady that had the Refolution to behold her Lord and three of her Sons, fighting at the Battle of Edghill, for their Church, their King, and the Liberties of their Country. Francis was then too young to bear a Part in that unhappy War; however, he betook himself fo early to the Sword, that he dy'd the oldeft Officer in England, a Lieutenant General, and Lieutenant Colonel of the Royal Regiment of Horfe-Guards.

About this Time Captain Edward Cowley was appointed his Majesty's Agent to the Dey of Tripoli.

Dec. 23, a Proclamation was publish'd for the Parliament to meet on the 17th of January, for the Difpatch of Bufinefs.

Dec. 24. This Day William Ainfly, a Serjeant in the Caftle of Edinburgh, was hang'd over the Wall of the said Caftle, near the Place where the Rebels made an Attempt to furprize it the laft Year, for being privy to the faid Defign.

This Day a Treaty of defenfive Alliance was fign'd at the Hague, between the Crowns of France and Great Britain, and the States General of the United Netherlands.

eminent Merchant.

Jan. 10, Mr. Hornby of the Pipe-Office, Mr. Wefton, Clerk of Grays-Inn, and Mr. Sunderland, Keeper of a CoffeeHoufe in Warwick-lane, were taken into Cuftody of Meflengers, and on the 15th were committed to Newgate.

The fame Day Mr. Mackintosh of Kellochy, and Mr. Gordon of Auchennachie, were committed Prifoners to Edinburgh Castle. The faid Mr. Mackintosh had made his Efcape fome Months before, out of Newgate, and going by Sea to Inverness, was deliver'd by the Mafter of the Ship, to the Government there, who fent him to Edinburgh.

Jan. 12, Mr. Burdett and Mr. Winchurch were try'd at the Old Baily, for the Murder of Capt. Faulkner,and found guilty. The fame Day Mr. Dawfon and Mr. Biggs, who lay under Sentence of Death for altering Bank-Notes, having obtain'd his Majefty's Pardon, on Condition that they fhould tranfport them felves, and not return into EngTand without the King's Leave, were difcharg'd out of Newgate.

The fame Day Charles Hornby, Efq; Mr. Wefton, and Mr. Sunderland, were admitted to Bail before Mr. Juftice Eyre. The Reverend Mr. Cosberg was elected Minister of St. Thomas's in Southwark. And

Peregrine Widdrington, Efq; Francis Anderton, Efq; Mr. Standish of Standish, Mr. Philip Hodg fon, Mr. James Talbot who formerly efcap'd out of Newgate, but was retaken, and Mr. Erington, were taken out of that Prifon, and put into Cuftody of three of his Majefty's Meffengers,

The fame Day the Parliament met, and adjourn'd to the 24th of that Month.

The Governors of the Charter-Houfe met this Day in the Prince's Chamber,and elected Mr. Serjeant Rotherham to be Steward of the Courts, and Mr. Davison to be Auditor of the Accompts, of the Charter,House.

Jan. 19, Mr. Lockington, Treasurer of Chrift's Hofpital, dy'd of an Apoplexy.

The King fet from Hanover on the 8th of this Month, arriv'd the 11th at Utrecht, where he immediately went on Board a Yacht of the States-General,came that Night to Alphen, from whence he continu'd his Journey the next Morning through Leyden and Delft,tarlaerdingen below Rotterdam, where he tarry'd 'till the 14th, and then embark'd on Board one of their High-Mightineffes large Yachts, which carry'd his Majefty to Helvoetfluys, where on the 17th he went on Board a Yacht of his own, and fetting Sail for England, arriv'd the 18th at Margate, lay that Night at Canterbury, and on the 19th in the Evening came to his Palace at St. James's.
