Appendix B UNITED NATIONS ON-LINE DATABASES Marilee Cunningham Intelligence Specialist First Class, U.S. Naval Reserve Official UN databases provide information on peacekeeping, on humanitarian affairs, and on refugee and human rights issues. In general, UN databases provide organizational and legal background on issues, whereas international, national and non-governmental agencies make available UNrelated operational information through links to publications and news services. Research centers and universities often provide full-text articles and research products. UNITED NATIONS HOME PAGE The United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) manages its World Wide Web services from its Secretariat offices in New York. This is the United Nations Home Page, and is the starting point for basic UN information. On the Home Page menu, there are choices of general and topical icons. A click on an icon will move you to a second page menu with more detailed contents. For example, "About the UN" contains historical descriptions of the principal organs, the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. An on-line world map allows a researcher to click on the web sites of the UN's offices or specialized agencies worldwide. The following list of addresses for UN-related web sites may offer a useful starting point for research on UN issues. The basic UN web sites are provided first, followed by a general list of non-UN sites that relate to UN issues. Peacekeeping, humanitarian and human rights sites are listed in detail.
