it was ok

** spoiler alert ** Wow, what a disappointment. After such a great start, Westerfeld had my attention, and I was hooked and ready to find out what book two held for these characters. I lost count of how many times Westerfeld used the words bubbly and bogus. It got old really quickly. I liked the introduction of a new character and love interest for Tally-- Zane is a great character, and I actually did not see the ending coming. The plot however, is contradictory. Tally fighting memories that were brought back to her from playing tricks? It doesn't make sense that a city that prides themselves on keeping control would let citizens keep their memories. Tally is supposed to be above genetics, but then so is anyone else that remembers old memories before the operation. I liked their escape from the City, but Tally meeting Andrew Simpson Smith is odd and that sectionof the story seems forced and does not go with the plot. The ending is a good twist although I knew Tally was going to be made a special when she had the conversation with Dr. Cable earlier. I just didn't see Shay being the one to make her turn special. Overall, though, I felt let-down from the first book.
