The Maze Runner by james Dashner is an extremely popular science fiction novel which later became a major film. The story revolves around a young man named Thomas, who mysteriously finds himself in a strange location known as "The Glade". The environment outside of the Glade is an ever changing area known as the "Maze", which is occupied by creatures known as "Grievers". Thomas meets a new girl in the Glade named Teresa, and after recovering into a coma, she reveals that they have a special connection and implies that they should use it to find out who they are and how to get back to their lives. Thomas tries to discover the patterns and codes of the Maze and learn about his surroundings, and goes to extreme lengths to do so. Dashner has a suspenseful writing style and was able to keep me engaged throughout the book, and the plot was interesting. The reason that this book received only three stars in my opinion is the way that the characters were conveyed. Thomas was an interesting character who was unique in his actions and thoughts. Teresa and other bigger characters were not portrayed in the same manner. For the most part, these characters were static and undeveloped. Had Dashner explored their minds and developed their personalities and added their unique effects to the plot, the novel would have been a bit more exciting and I would even consider reading it for a second time.
