If I'd tried to write a story stuffed full of cliches, I couldn't have done as well. While the overall story is pretty good (nothing mind blowing but decent enough), the writing is flimsy and lacking in spark and originality. The characters are pretty flat as well. I wouldn't recommend it - while the reading level is appropriate for pre-teen readers, some of the content isn't. And for older readers, it would fall flat after something like The Hunger Games.
