i need to make something perfectly clear. i am well aware that i gave 4 stars to Daughter of Smoke and Bone. and i am giving 5 stars to this one.
the world is a tough and inconsistent sphere.
because Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a much much better written book. it's no contest. she is lush and lyrical and there is a gravity to her writing that makes you stop every so often to murmur, "well said, laini taylor, well said..."
this book is just fun.
fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun
this is unexpected pillowfight, marshmallow syrup on strawberry ice cream, kitten in a bag fun.
it was recommended to me on here by a different karen, and i borrowed it from work almost immediately. before that,i had never even heard of it, which is strange, because it appears to be something of a sensation. and i definitely get why.
if you are someone who needs your dystopian fiction to, you know, make sense, you probably won't like this. no one is going to read this book and think, "oh, man - that is exactly where our society is headed! i can see that becoming a reality in five years' time!!" nope.
it is more like a board game: there are rules and you accept them and you play. "but why are you a scottie dog and i am a thimble?? that makes no sense!!"
because that's how that game is played. stop asking so many questions and roll the dice.
fun fun fun fun violence fun fighting fun fun fun (view spoiler) superfun whaaaaaaat? fun pow.
i love this character, i love this book, i love the construct, as little as it holds up to scrutiny. all i know is it grabbed my attention and i refused to stop reading. there was no grilled cheese that night, let me tell you. i want this entire series to be written, now, and i want to climb out onto my fire escape with a package of iced oatmeal cookies and my rabbit and some pink lemonade and not be disturbed for a week or so. depending on how long this series is going to be.
oh, but bad cover. bad, bad cover. i would never have picked this up without the rec.

yeah, i am definitely going to review this, but i still have some others to review - i am reading too quickly to keep up with the reviewing! but yeah - soooo much fun!
Maybe I took this book too seriously because like you said, sometimes we should just accept and go with it. But still...anyway, your review was...fun! Haha!
Maybe your dislike of the cover explains why this book is not checking out in my library despite the buzz surrounding it (at least among librarians and booksellers and publishers) and the popularity of teen dystopias. I thought it was cool-looking, but maybe it's too abstract?
Yeah for me this one came out of the left-field of awesomeness. Good stuff.
1) kittens in a paper bag, like when they get curious and pounce:

2) the cover just looks cheap to me. and it looks like a boy-robot adventure book. or like this:
zooom!

Agree with you on the cover. It looks sort of generic and I-may-have-a-weather-control-device type of plot.
I see your kitten in a bag and I raise you cat with a giant box.

but you see my point. you remember i also gave fve stars to Killer Crabs. but also!!! also Lips Touch: Three Times. maybe i just have superhigh expectations for laini. (first-name basis - woo!!) no, but tomato, you know i loved that book. i loved that book. now i gotta go see what this giant box is all about.

Marshmallow syrup?! I did not know there was such a thing! Can you put it in grilled cheese? Or on emergency rations?
it's the stuff ice cream parlors have. i like it best over black raspberry. i don't know why i said strawberry before.
The husband and I were JUST talking about red pandas this morning! Weird.
This review is so awesome, btw. I know what you mean about "if you need your dystopian fiction to make sense..." if I like the writing and am entertained, I'm willing to overlook some stuff. This sounds really fun! But I will be back to complain loudly and bitterly if it sucks.

Karen, it's not the sharks I loathe...it's the self-centered, stalker-ish, whiny teenage girls.
Tommy: Eh...this is awkward. I have not read LTT, mainly because I was so weirded out by the constant references to the red, red lips on the men. :/ I know, I know! I have seen the rave reviews, but I don't know if I can do it.

as usual, my fucking library doesn't have this book which means if i want to read it i have to buy it...i guess since you gave it 5 stars, it's worth it, yeah?and how did you get daughter of smoke and bone already? it's not supposed to be coming out until september!
now i can't even order one because of the fucking postal strike...GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! the good news is it's only just over $10 from bookdepository.com.
tommy got me an ARC from BEA. as for this one - it's a lot of fun (as you may have gleaned from my review)but i'm skeered because i don't know if other people would like it enough to own it. i need to see where the rest of the series goes. but if it's cheap - why not?
I'm another one that hadn't even heard of this book. Oh well better late than never. One more for the wish list. By the way my favourite place to read is in the kitchen. And always with music
love this review, and couldn't agree more. i want to read this book for the first time again and again, but it won't be the first time :( oh whyyyyy is the second one not out yet?
Love this review (after typing this I see that this is just how the last comment started...heh). But I love the fact that you make it very clear what about this book worked for you.
Could not agree more about the cover -- truly bad!!! "there was no grilled cheese that night" :D :D :D
Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down either. Groovalicious!

It's being translated into 16 different languages ... I'll be really curious to see the design foreign publishers come up with
just play with the format - be creative. "reviewing" here gives you all sorts of opportunities that regular reviewing doesn't. like this:

any time you can put that picture in a book review - it automatically becomes fun.

Hahahahaha this is why I love your reviews Karen!! So true!!!
