Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, #1)

I really REALLY wanted to love this book, in the same way I loved Notebook of Doom, Dragon Masters and Last Kids on Earth for my boys. Placing myself into the (frightful) mind of a pre-teen boy, I can completely see the appeal. The language is accessible and the "diary" entries easy to digest even for early readers like my 6 year old. The jokes are age appropriate and had my kids giggling.
But as a parent, Greg Heffley would be banned from hanging out with my children.
He is the embodiment of all the bad behavior I work hard to steer my kids away from. And if it were presented with some kind of "moral awakening" at the end of the book, I could live with an anti-hero that learned a good lesson. Unfortunately, Greg is just an anti-hero with no moral check in sight. At the end of the day, I see how the book succeeds as it speaks directly to the self-centered, skewed perspective of a pre-teen/teen....that's just not the kind of character I want my kids learning from when there are so many better options.
