bookshelves: family-library

A nice thrift store find, and a pleasant enough diversion for a few hours. I saw the movie a few years back, and was hoping the paper version of Greg wasn't quite so unlikable - luckily, I was right. Book-Greg isn't a hero, but he's not nearly as off-putting as Movie-Greg.

Worth the read, so I can add it to the family shelf; I would read the subsequent volumes if I came across them.

(Decided not to rate, since I'm not exactly the target audience.)

ETA: Regarding the "family shelf" mention - it's true this isn't the most socially redeeming work available for young readers, but sometimes even the mind likes a little junk food. Greg is a fairly unethical guy, but he's not exactly portrayed as admirable, so I suspect most kids realize it's not a manual for building strong communitarian values. Middle school is bleak enough, so we may as well poke a little fun at it.

ETA 2: Re-reading, January 2016, out loud to my son. I have decided I don't want him reading these books to himself; this way, he and I can discuss what a horrible human Greg is, and I can get a sense of how this series might affect him.
