Pretties (Uglies, #2)

Why did I read the second one when I didn't really like the first one? Because I'm a compulsive reader, that's why. Dang it.
Sorry - but I just can't like this series. The intent to address key issues for teens is just way too obvious and clunky in the writing. "Hey kids - let's talk through some stuff you might be struggling with - like cutting and cliques and peer pressure and poor self confidence." It's jammed in the story artificially and doesn't seem to flow well with the dystopian idea that could be really good on its own.
And then (surprise!) we throw in our heroine's tough choice between 2 boys - very Team Edward/Team Jacob - in what is pretty obviously a copy-cat.
Overall, if I were a teen girl, I'd probably get into this series and maybe even learn some lessons. But I'm a 39 year old mom and so I need to go read something with teeth now.
