Recap of my feelings for this book: eh...
Personal note to this author and every other YA author out there: a swear word by any or their name is still a swear word. Stop attempting to be "safe" by inventing your own. It's annoying.
The good: the concept was a bit more unique than a lot that I've read. I've not decided exactly who's side I'm actually on, which will keep me interested enough to give the next book a try. The author actually writes a smooth read, if a bit slow.
The bad: dues ex machina much? It felt like you painted yourself into a corner and suddenly 'insert saving action/person/situation here' happens. Stop telling me how to feel and let me feel my own feelings by being immersed in your story. The story is certainly not character driven, but it would have been nice to have some sort of character development, or even some personality. There is no investment even remotely encouraged in this book.
The ugly: I think if I'm told one more time that our main character is frustrated, I'd throw the book across the room. The lack of communication or want to attempt to discuss and figure things out, but still going through the motions, is so completely at odds with each other it's distracting and unrealistic. The actions do not make sense for the characters. Some of the elements brought in (namely the situation between Thomas and Theresa) make zero sense at all and gives nothing to the story. Here's hoping it plays a roll later in the books, because if it doesn't, this author sucks.
Side note and personal glitch: you have one female character in the book and you decide to use descriptive words such as "pretty" etc. CONSTANTLY with one part that seems like an afterthought of "oh yeah, and smart"? Way to slice out the female audience. Not once are the boys described as handsome or other similar descriptions. Step it up.
