it was ok
bookshelves: reviewed, two-stars, 2014

I saw The Maze Runner was an up and coming film and being the nerd that I am I always have to read the book before I see the film. I went out and bought a copy and I have to say I was disappointed; this book is definitely not one of my favourites and I would not read it again.

In saying that though, the story line was quite good and left you thinking but it was just the writing style that let this book down, the story line had the potential to be so much more. Dashner needs to find more creative ways to describe Thomas's thought's and emotions. The character development was also practically non-existent and I felt that Dashner actually wanted Thomas to come off as annoying and boring. Newt and Minho were the only characters from the book that I found even slightly likeable. Even though the story line was interesting, it wasn't interesting enough for me to read the next two books.

I don't quite know how this book got so popular when there are so many better YA books out there but if you are not an overly confident reader and enjoy dystopian novels then I would suggest this to you. If you're an avid reader, I suggest don't bother picking up this book.
