The Maze Runner (The Maze Runner, #1)

I rarely give up on a book 11 pages in. I also don't typically support people who review books they didn't finish. However, this book started off horribly and I cannot fathom why on earth it has received the ratings it has. The slang is annoying, the other characters refusing to tell the main character what is going on is exasperating and is the very definition of contrived.
The interactions and dialogue feel stiff and forced. I try to give books a fair chance, but with a backlog as long as I have at the moment and after having had this title on a wait list for several months before getting it, you can only imagine my frustration at being presented with what I consider to be amateur writing (and that's putting it nicely).
To me, even if the writing is poor, if the overall 'setup' is intriguing enough (you know, where the author actually TELLS you something, throws you some kind of a bone other than "I'll tell you what's going on later") then I'll push through. There was literally nothing presented that made me want to keep going. Constant sighs and eye rolls occurred during almost the entire 11 pages I trudged through.
In any case, the dystopian genre is becoming overly saturated and completely played out in my opinion. This is the last one I'll be trying for quite a while.
