Opal stole my heart from page one. She never knew her mother, and had to move to a new town, but she didn't become bitter or blame her father (who was a caring and loving father), the only family she had. I loved how, when she found out that Gloria Dump's eyesight was failing and she could no longer read, she went to her friend the librarian and asked for a book recommendation. She came back with Gone with the Wind to read to Gloria, and a touching story about the role pain plays on past, present, and future. Understanding the pain of others and how it shaped them helped her understand her own pain, and brings all the characters together to the point where they cease to be characters and take on a life of their own, almost. I would give this to a young reader who loves stories about eccentric but lovable dogs, and adults would get something out of it as well. ( )

"Because of Winn-Dixie" is a beautifully written story that follows a girl named Opal and the stray dog she adopts. Opal names the dog after the grocery store she finds him at "Winn-Dixie." The dog connects Opal to members of the community she otherwise wouldn't have met. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal learns about growth, forgiveness and friendship. This heartwarming book explores the themes of friendship and what the companionship of a pet can mean. ( )

Really good. Sweet, not too simple, with a depth and breadth that surprised me. ( )

What an amazing audio book. The reader, Cherry Jones, really gave the book this life it wouldn't have had if I'd just read it. She did great, musical southern accents. ( )

A great dog story where the dog doesn't die in the end!

One summer's day, ten-year-old India Opal Buloni goes down to the local supermarket for some groceries - and comes home with a dog. But Winn-Dixie is no ordinary dog. It's because of Winn-Dixie that Opal begins to make friends. And it's because of Winn-Dixie that she finally dares to ask her father about her mother, who left when Opal was three. In fact, as Opal admits, just about everything that happens that summer is because of Winn-Dixie.

This is a cute coming of age story I found on HOOPLA while looking for something to read directly before bedtime. There are themes of loss, friendship, forgiveness and empathy that might resonate with children. I found the characters to be rather simplistic though and the story a bit too sappy.

It was excited when Winn-Dixie caught the mouse. That was neat. I liked that they were in Florida and when she got Winn-Dixie. ( )

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo, is a chapter book for 4th and 5th grade readers. Opal has had a rough time for a little girl. Her mother abandoned Opal and her dad, and then her dad, a preacher, uprooted Opal and moved to Florida. Opal misses her old friends and has a hard time making new ones. That begins to change when she brings a rather ugly stray dog home from a shopping trip to the Winn-Dixie. ( )

Pretty timeless. I read this again recently (the last time being over ten years ago), and it was just as great as I had remembered. ( )

Opal and her father move to Florida and one day Opal goes in the Winn-Dixie Super Market and comes out with a dog she names Winn-Dixie. Because of Winn-Dixie, her father, the preacher, tells Opal ten things about her absent mother, one for each year she has been alive. That summer, Winn-Dixie and Opal meet many new friends and spend a lot of time together. Many great new things happen because of Winn-Dixie. ( )

This story follows a little girl named Opal, who just moved to a new southern town when her dad got a new job as the town priest. Opal struggles to make friends until she comes across a lost dog who changes her life forever. She goes from having no friends to developing many new positive relationships, even ones she did not think she would ever have. ( )

A lovely children's book about a lonely 10-year-old in a new town, who "rescues" a stray dog, and finds that the benefits are mutual. Newbery Honor winner. Loved it.

I was inspired to read this after I heard the author interviewed by Krista Tippett on the radio show On Being. It's a sweet story of love, loss, and quirky people finding out how they get along. ( )

This is a good book, especially to read aloud. Not a lot of action, but still a great story! ( )
