This is my second time reading this novel. I had a totally different perspective when I read it the 2nd time because I anaylzed the book through its relation to the time period in which it was published, which is WWII. Therefore, as I was reading, I was able to see how Forbes inserted WWII ideals into her portrayal of the Revolutionary War. However, this does not take away from the overall historical aspect of the book. Rather, it makes it a more thought-provoking read because readers are able to analyze both wars through reading one novel. I also was able to appreciate a lot of the humor in the story that I missed out on when I read the book in 7th grade. The only way this book could have been improved is if Rab's death could have been more dramatic, like if Johnny was with him and he got shot while in battle. Overall, this is a great historical fiction classic!
