it was ok

** spoiler alert ** Pretties just really went downhill from Uglies. I mean Uglies had definite flaws, but Pretties was definitely more difficult to read through. I read it fast, but it wasn't because I had to keep reading due to interest and I couldn't put the book down. It was more like I just wanted to get it over with. The first 3/4 of the book were very slow. It felt like nothing really happened and I was so sick of reading about the prettyminded Crims and other pretties. I kept seeing the words "bogus" and "bubbly" which really annoyed me. And how many times can you say "totally?" It was just hard to keep reading when I had no interest in the characters and the setting. New Pretty Town just sounded generic, like the other settings, and did nothing for me. The only character I really liked was Zane because he wasn't as shallow and actually had some intellectual moments. He also was selfless, brave and sweet. While Tally couldn't even work up the nerve to take both pills, he would have gladly done so.

Tally, as always, annoyed me. She just seemed really shallow, and I don't think she deserves Zane or David. Frankly, I don't find her appealing as a main character. I understand she was prettyminded in the beginning and she is supposed to be obnoxious, but I still found her obnoxious after she started to feel "bubbly." She seems to have less concern for her supposed best friend Shay than she should. Plus, she is all over the place. One minute, she's all about Zane and the next she is reliving her memories with David. I felt David and her should have talked more when they saw each other again. The ending finally showed some action but it was very abrupt. They make it to the New Smoke and five minutes later, the Specials are there.

The plot was also kind of a repeat of the first book. First, Tally wanted to be included in a group, the Crims now instead of the Pretties. Then, she is trying to escape and is up to her tricks. Then she is at the Smoke again. And finally, she has led the Specials to the New Smokies once again. A lot of the book just seemed overused and predictable.

I feel harsh giving this book two stars but it was just not as good as it could have been. The premise had a lot of potential, but it fell flat. I have to decide if I want to continue with the series and read Specials.
