Not exactly a textbook, not quite an explanation, The Power of Now is more like the summary of a really long conversation on enlightenment. The format is a bit challenging to get used to: a question about enlightenment is posed, and the author's answer follows. Once you get used to it though, it's like the author is answering all your questions right when you want to ask them.

With regards to the subject of enlightenment, this is not a book about Zen, Buddhism, or Christianity (although the authors theories are shown to be encompassing of all these).

The ideas about separating your ego from your true self are explained succinctly, and real-world examples are provided, which helped me relate to the theories. Taking the message of this book at face value is actually pretty mind-blowing.

…Then again, some of the theories are hard to swallow (menstruation as the door to enlightenment anyone?), and taken out of context, the ideas in this book are just plain cuckoo.

This book is dense, and the ideas can be intense. At times it's like reading a textbook, and it's not something you can skim through and take in completely. This book needs time to sink in, it's definitely not a quick read.

Recommended for people who are already familiar with theories about enlightenment and have an open mind when it comes to (what can seem like hippy dippy) mind-body connections.
