This book is the embodiment of the phrase the good, the bad and the ugly.

The Good - There are principles in this book which truly have the ability to be life changing. Understanding Tolle's message around the power of now and being present can cut through stress, fear and worry like a knife and that's no easy feat. The good parts of this book are excellent and I can't recommend them highly enough.

The Bad - If there is one thing Tolle lacks perspective on it is practicality. Most of us can't afford to spend a couple of years chilling on a bench being amazed by nature and most of us also wouldn't want to.

You get a sense reading this that he sees his life as the perfect ideal and he doesn't really make allowances for other personality types or opinions. In fact if you disagree with him it is because you don't really understand or you aren't ready for it yet. Hmmm.

Another example is when he quotes people like Jesus or Bhudda and says 'what they really meant was....'. There's an arrogance about that which I don't like.

The Ugly - Pain bodies? Vibrational fields? All atoms have consciousness? Psuedo-scientific musings on menstrating or heterosexuality? This is anti-scientific babble at it's worst. You don't need all this rubbish to get the power of now and I had to force myself to finish the book in the midst of such utter crap.

So in summary, I did get something useful out of this book, although I suspect there are probably others that have communicated it much better. If you are going to read it prep your BS radar and be prepared to sift for gold between the dirt.
