it was amazing

From the moment I started reading this novel I knew I would feel changed afterwards. Right from the get-go The Power of Now pulled me into a trance like state filled with my own history, feelings, and memories. The author, Eckhart Tolle, was not afraid to leave out details from his past as well. I felt totally submerged in its content as he brought me along on a spiritual journey, chapter after chapter. I was motivated and eager to practice all that he had to offer throughout the book.

It starts off ironically as he wants to bring up his past in a book that focuses on becoming present. He mentions he has a history of suffering from depression and anxiety by saying, “’I cannot live with myself any longer.’ This was the thought that kept repeating itself in my mind.” In other words, depression drags you down into depths you wouldn’t want to fall in, and is extremely difficult to crawl out of. The rest of the novel is him giving insight and tips on how to become present, and rid yourself of depression by not thinking about your past life, or future.

Even if your past was riddled by pain and suffering, Tolle claims he can save you from your problems. Marked by the self-help section of every bookstore throughout the past decade, he wants everybody to be in the present moment, and not stuck living their lives in the past or future. The main issue is our ego he says, “To the ego, the present moment hardly exists. Only past and future are considered important. The ego is always concerned with keeping the past alive, because without it, who are you?” I believe he sees the ego as a limiting agent that must be dropped to become our true self.

I found this book through a friend in New Jersey, but I have never heard of the author prior to this reading. It is a number one New York Times Best Seller, and definitely deserves such a title. It brings in adult readers who are serious about getting their lives started, or older adults who want to better themselves. I don’t believe many teens will be reading a spiritual book such as one like this, unless they have connected their body and mind together.

This novel seems to fit into his category with his other works in the self-help section. Many of his books are written as contemporary spiritual teachings, and this is a hit no doubt, selling over five million copies. As Eckhart Tolle put it, “I feel confident that in the years to come millions more will be drawn to it, and The Power of Now will continue to make vital contribution to the arising of a new consciousness and a more enlightened humanity.” I believe anybody who wants to drop their cell phones in a river or wish to free themselves from their devices, then I suggest you read this book.
