“I have lived with several Zen masters – all of them Cats. Even ducks have taught me important spiritual lessons. Just watching them is meditation…”

The above is a rare occasion when Tolle interjects some lightness into his otherwise condescending style of writing. A lot of what is said in this book is age-old wisdom on self-awareness, mindfulness and meditation, rehashed and reworded by the author into being present in the “Now”. Plenty of good, illuminating wisdom are dished out by the author in a plain language, which would help enlighten people in civilized societies (regardless of their material wealth) where human dignity upheld high, people are educated, and all sentient beings are respected. But realities for Earth’s major populations are sadly different; people are illiterate, face subjugation, exploitation, starvation, physical violence, or annihilation. Under these circumstances, I think it would be very difficult for people to forget their past traumas, overcome their fear for the future, and be centered and focus on the Now and Being.
